5 tips for a successful operations training day

As peak season looms near, it’s crucial for Vacation Rental Managers to ensure their field teams are prepared to deliver exceptional service.

One of the best ways to prepare for peak season is to host a training for your field teams.

Here are 5 things to cover before Memorial Day.

1. Review your standards
Whether you’re a Durk Johnson fangirl or a newbie when it comes to back-of-house SOPs, it’s important to decide what your company says is the standard for every part of operations that you are investing in. What does a clean home mean to you? What does a guest ready home look like? What does a maintained home mean to you? Don’t assume that everyone knows what matters to you - you need to define, document and role out these standards to your teams so that everyone knows what success looks like and can celebrate when you achieve it.

2. Simplify your software
Your software is built and configured by people who don’t use it on phones and tablets. Get feedback from your teams, simplify your process and train your field teams. Record videos, write up documentation and perform in person training to guide your teams through so you cover all styles of learning.

3. Get controlled feedback
Spend some time with your core leadership to create a list of questions that will give you valuable feedback without spiraling in a negative path. Your field teams are your eyes and ears and not creating a forum to get that feedback is a waste of resources already spent. So consider including this in your operations training.

4. Build team culture
Don’t underestimate the power of a shared meal or drink. Venting builds camaraderie and helps fortify purpose behind our work. Bring your people together for the sole purpose of being together and celebrate your colleagues for big and small moments.

5. Roll out an incentive program
Find out what motivates your teams and create incentives so that everyone is rowing in the direction of success that you define. Whether you reward 5 star reviews that mention cleaning with a financial bonus or you create a platform that celebrates and rewards folks who demonstrate your core values, make sure that you are incentivizing in your direction of success.

This is a recipe to set up your field teams for success, use it as a learning tool and improve operations to create seamless peak seasons. An operations training also serves as an opportunity to bond with your teams and build a positive working environment.
